Why Mettelo Exists
What Is Mettelo?
Mettelo is building professional capability infrastructure for Data, AI and technology professionals.
The aim is to create a connected environment where people can:
build a professional identity;
connect with other professionals;
discover practical projects and opportunities;
work individually or collaboratively;
take responsibility for defined roles and contributions;
manage project work, tasks and milestones;
attend practical workshops and professional events;
receive feedback and review;
build evidence from the work they contribute to;
develop leadership capability; and
connect that evidence to wider professional opportunities.
Mettelo is therefore not being built simply as another training platform, project website, job board, WhatsApp group, Discord server or events community. Some of those things form part of the experience, but the longer-term goal is to connect them around professional capability.
At the centre of this is contribution. Knowing a tool is useful, but being able to show where you used that tool, what problem you were responsible for, what decisions you made, what you produced, how the work was reviewed and what you learned provides stronger evidence of professional capability.
That is why the Mettelo model increasingly focuses on the relationship between:
Role → Task → Output → Review → Proof
Over time, we want members to be able to build a professional record showing:
the problems they worked on;
the role they played;
the tasks they owned;
the decisions they made;
the outputs they produced;
how their work was reviewed; and
the evidence behind their contribution.
Where Mettelo Is Today
Mettelo is still under development, and the complete platform described above is not fully live yet. We want to be clear about that.
We are currently in an early community-building and product-development stage. Rather than asking people to wait until every part of the platform has been completed, we are already putting parts of the Mettelo model into practice through the community. This allows members to learn, collaborate and contribute today, while also helping us understand what structures, workflows and product features are needed as the platform develops.

The distinction is important: the community activities are already live, while the wider connected product infrastructure is still being built.
What You Can Do in Mettelo Today
Members do not need to wait for the full product before participating. Depending on where you are in your professional journey, you can currently use Mettelo to learn, collaborate, contribute, work on projects, share your experience, support other members and build practical evidence.

Mettelo Practical Workshops
Mettelo Practical Workshops focus on how technical skills are actually used to solve problems. The intention is not simply to explain where a button is located or show isolated syntax. We want members to see how technical work connects to a business or organisational problem, how decisions are made and how the final output is produced.
Our first programme is the 8-Week Practical Power BI Workshop Series, which follows the journey:

Future practical workshops can cover areas such as:

Mettelo Event Series
Technical capability is important, but professional growth extends beyond technical tools. The Mettelo Event Series focuses on the wider challenges professionals face throughout their careers.
Topics may include:
job search and applications;
CV and resume development;
interview preparation;
portfolio reviews;
Data storytelling;
professional communication;
stakeholder management;
networking;
leadership;
career progression;
workplace experiences;
project showcases; and
industry conversations.
Some sessions may take the form of presentations, while others may include panel discussions, AMAs, portfolio reviews, career clinics, project showcases and conversations with professionals working across different parts of Data, AI and technology.
Where recordings are available, previous sessions will also be published through the Mettelo YouTube channel.
Mettelo Community Projects
Projects are one of the main ways we are beginning to put the Mettelo idea into practice. They give members opportunities to work on problems, make decisions, produce deliverables and, where relevant, collaborate with other professionals.
The first generation of Mettelo projects has intentionally been kept relatively simple. We are not trying to recreate every complexity of a large organisation immediately. At this stage, the focus is on helping members practise:
understanding a problem;
choosing an approach;
dividing responsibilities;
working with other people;
communicating progress;
making decisions;
managing deadlines;
documenting work;
taking ownership; and
delivering something they can explain.
As the Mettelo product develops, we plan to introduce more realistic and structured project experiences involving deeper professional requirements, stakeholders, constraints, review and stronger contribution evidence.
There are currently 10 Mettelo projects available across Data Analytics, Business Intelligence, Data Engineering, Data Science and Artificial Intelligence. Each project includes:
a case study;
problem statement;
data source;
implementation requirements;
expected deliverables;
acceptance criteria;
suggested tools; and
submission guidance.

How Project Participation Works
If you want to participate in a Mettelo project, the current process is straightforward:
Browse the Project Library. Read the project properly before selecting it, including the problem, data, deliverables and expected skills.
Choose how you want to participate. Depending on the project, you may work independently, join a team or indicate that you would like to lead.
Complete the Project Participation Form. Provide accurate information about your project choice, experience, availability, GitHub experience and preferred contribution area.
Join Mettelo Lab. Project discussions, collaboration and team interaction happen there.
Prepare your GitHub account. GitHub is an important part of Mettelo project delivery.
Join your project repository when your team is formed. Team repositories are created under the Mettelo GitHub organisation and relevant contributors are added.

For team projects, GitHub becomes part of the evidence trail for the work. It helps make project documentation, technical changes, outputs and individual contribution more visible.
Ways to Participate in Projects
Depending on the project and the roles required, members may participate in different ways.
Solo: Work independently through a structured project and take responsibility for the complete delivery.
Team Member: Work with other members, take responsibility for defined parts of the project and contribute towards a shared outcome.
Team Lead: Help organise the project, coordinate responsibilities, support communication, manage delivery and help the team reach the required outcome.
Leadership is not simply about being the most technically experienced person. A strong project lead helps people understand the problem, organises the work, enables collaboration and takes responsibility for moving the project forward.
What We Want Members to Develop Through Projects
The purpose of a Mettelo project is not simply to create another dashboard or repository for a portfolio. We want projects to help members develop both technical and professional capability.
Technical capability can include:

Professional capability can include:

giving and receiving feedback;

The project should also create evidence that can later help someone explain their experience in a CV, portfolio, interview, professional profile or future Mettelo contribution record.
The important question becomes:
What did you contribute, what decisions did you make and what evidence supports it?
Mettelo Lab
Mettelo Lab is the deeper participation and collaboration space within the community. It is where members can discuss projects, find collaborators, ask technical and professional questions, exchange knowledge, share progress and get more actively involved in what Mettelo is building.
Members can use Mettelo Lab to:
discuss current projects;
find people with complementary skills;
ask technical questions;
share project progress;
exchange professional knowledge;
troubleshoot challenges;
support other members;
discuss new ideas; and
participate in wider Mettelo initiatives.

Contributing to Mettelo
Mettelo is intended to be a community where members can contribute knowledge and experience, not only consume content.
There are many ways to contribute. You can:
run a Practical Workshop;
co-facilitate a workshop;
speak at a Mettelo event;
join a panel or discussion;
lead a project;
join a project team;
review another member's work;
support someone who is troubleshooting a problem;
share useful professional experience;
mentor another member;
review portfolios;
share relevant opportunities;
connect people who may be able to work together;
present completed project work; or
contribute to future Mettelo initiatives and open-source work.

Project Showcases
Where appropriate, project teams may also have the opportunity to present their completed work to the wider Mettelo community.
A showcase can cover:
the problem the team worked on;
how the problem was approached;
important decisions made during the project;
technical or professional challenges encountered;
what each person contributed;
the final output;
lessons learned; and
what the team would improve if they approached the problem again.
The goal is not simply to display a dashboard, model or GitHub repository. Being able to explain the work, answer questions and discuss the reasoning behind decisions is also part of professional capability.
Who Is Mettelo For?
Mettelo is being designed for people at different stages of their professional journey.
You may be:
Learning — building technical foundations and trying to understand how skills are applied professionally.
Breaking in — trying to enter Data, AI or technology and looking for stronger practical experience and evidence.
Working — already employed professionally but looking to develop different skills, collaborate outside your organisation or build experience in another area.
Progressing — building stronger evidence, wider responsibility and professional capability.
Leading — interested in mentoring, facilitation, project leadership, review and helping other professionals develop.
You do not need to be a beginner to benefit from Mettelo, and you do not need to be an expert before you can contribute. The way you participate can depend on your experience, interests, availability and goals.
Where Mettelo Is Going
The longer-term Mettelo platform is being designed to connect the different parts of the professional journey that are currently fragmented.
Members should eventually be able to:
maintain a professional identity;
discover other professionals;
discover projects and opportunities;
apply for project roles;
work through structured project spaces;
manage tasks and milestones;
build a contribution history;
receive review and feedback;
create professional proof;
develop leadership capability; and
become discoverable for relevant opportunities.
The progression model being developed also allows contribution to grow into greater responsibility. A member might initially contribute to defined work, gradually build a history of reliable contribution, lead projects and eventually progress into deeper leadership roles such as Project Architect. The underlying idea is that responsibility should grow alongside reviewed evidence of capability.
Ultimately, Mettelo aims to connect four sides of the professional ecosystem:
Members — people with skills, experience, time and ambition;
Projects — practical problems requiring contribution;
Organisations — organisations with problems, expertise or demand; and
Opportunities — jobs, collaboration, leadership, mentoring, volunteering and potentially paid project work.
Jobs can therefore be part of the future Mettelo opportunity layer, but Mettelo is not being built simply as another recruitment website.

Mettelo is still growing, and the product will continue to evolve as we build, test and learn with the community. Some people will come to learn, some will work on projects, some will contribute professional experience, some will lead and some may simply observe until the right opportunity appears.
The aim is to create an environment where people have more opportunities to turn what they know into something they can apply, contribute, explain and evidence.

Mettelo — Built for What’s Next.
There are already many places where people can learn SQL, Power BI, Python, Machine Learning, Data Engineering, Artificial Intelligence and other technical skills. Access to learning has increased significantly, but learning a technical tool is only one part of becoming effective in a professional environment.
In the workplace, people also need to be able to:
understand a business or organisational problem;
decide how to approach it;
work with incomplete or changing information;
collaborate with people who have different responsibilities and perspectives;
communicate their thinking clearly;
manage responsibilities, priorities and deadlines;
document their work;
receive and respond to feedback;
explain why particular decisions were made; and
take responsibility for the outcome of their work.
These capabilities are usually developed through experience, and that creates a difficult gap for many people trying to build or progress their careers.
Someone may have completed several courses and developed strong technical knowledge but still need opportunities to apply those skills in realistic situations. Someone else may have built personal portfolio projects but find it difficult to demonstrate collaboration, responsibility, review, professional judgement or leadership. Experienced professionals may also want exposure to a different area, an opportunity to lead something outside their current job, collaborate with people from other disciplines or build evidence of capabilities they are not currently able to demonstrate at work.
Even when people gain these experiences, the evidence is often fragmented. Learning may happen on one platform, projects somewhere else, professional connections elsewhere, GitHub contributions in another place and career opportunities on a completely different platform.
A professional journey can therefore become scattered across:
courses and certifications;
personal projects;
GitHub repositories;
professional communities;
workplace experience;
mentoring and volunteering;
events and workshops;
professional networks; and
job and collaboration platforms.
It can become difficult to build a connected professional record showing not only what someone knows, but what they have actually contributed and how that contribution has developed over time.
This is the problem Mettelo is being built to address.
The Missing Middle
We do not believe the challenge is simply a lack of courses. There is often a missing middle between learning something and being able to demonstrate that you can use it effectively in a professional environment.

Learning gives you knowledge, but applying that knowledge gives you experience. Taking responsibility for part of the work creates contribution. Review helps strengthen that contribution, and evidence allows you to explain what you actually did, what decisions you made and what outcomes you helped create. That evidence can then support progression, collaboration and professional opportunities.
